The Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts “Beit al-Hikma”, in collaboration with Tunisia’s Office of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University, held a lecture by Professor Eugene Rogan, Director of the Middle East Center at St Antony’s College, University of Oxford; Professor of Modern Middle Eastern History at the University of Oxford and Fellow of the British Academy since 2017.
Eugene Rogan holds a BA in economics from Columbia University, and an MA and Ph.D. in Middle Eastern history from Harvard University, with an affiliation with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard. He is the author of several books and publications, among which:
“The Arabs: A History”, 2009, 3rd edition 2018, which has been translated in 18 languages and was named one of the best books of 2009 by The Economist, The Financial Times, and The Atlantic Monthly.
“Frontiers of the State in the Late Ottoman Empire”, 1999, for which he received the Albert Hourani Book Award of the Middle East Studies Association of North America and the Fuad Köprülü Prize of the Turkish Studies Association.
“The War for Palestine: Rewriting the History of 1948”, 2001, second edition 2007.
“Outside In: On the Margins of the Modern Middle East”, 2002.
“The Fall of the Ottomans: The Great War in the Middle East, 1914-1920, in February 2015.
The lecture’s topic was about : “The Damascus Events: Death and Reconciliation in 19th Century Damascus”. Prof. Rogan discussed the tragic events between the Christian and Druze communities of Damascus in July 1860, the key role played by Emir Abd el-Kader in the conflict, as well as the time of post-conflict reconstruction.
The conference was held on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 4 p.m. at the Tunisian Academy in Carthage. The language of this conference was mainly English.
